Tafseer Surah an-Nisa Ayah 44 and 45

Chastising the Jews for Choosing Misguidance

In previous ayaat, the stress was on acting with taqwa in mutual dealings. Then we read about some rules pertaining to ibadah, salah and their corollaries since they instill man with fear of Allah, promote concern for the life-to-come and help in seeing that dealings come out right and smooth.

The present ayaat [44 – 46] take up the matter of dealings with enemies. They bring into focus the wicked tricks, in word and deed, as practiced by the non-believers, and then gives a view of what is true and correct. This last aspect is in a way an exhortation to Muslims that they should be careful in choosing the words they use to say what they have to say, for mincing words is not their style.

In ayah 44, Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala states that the Jews have purchased the wrong path instead of guidance and ignored what Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala sent down to His Messenger sallAllahu aalyhi wa sallam. They also ignored the knowledge that they inherited from previous Prophets, about the description of Muhammad sallAllahu aalyhi wa sallam, so that they may have a small amount of the delights of this life.

وَيُرِيدُونَ أَن تَضِلُّواْ السَّبِيلَ

“…and wishing that you should go astray from the right path.”

The non-believers would want the Muslims to disbelieve in what was sent down to them and that they abandon guidance and beneficial knowledge that Muslims have.

Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala then reminds us that He has better knowledge of our enemies, hence He is warning us against them.

وَاللَّهُ أَعْلَمُ بِأَعْدَائِكُمْ

“Allah has full knowledge of your enemies…”

وَكَفَى بِاللَّهِ وَلِيّاً وَكَفَى بِاللَّهِ نَصِيراً

“….and Allah is sufficient as a Wali (Protector), and Allah is Sufficient as a Helper.”

He is a Sufficient Protector for those who seek refuge with Him and a Sufficient Supporter for those who seek His help. He asks us, “Do you not see those who were given a portion of the Book, purchasing error and wishing that you stray from the (straight) way? And Allah knows better about your enemies and sufficient is Allah as a Protector, and sufficient is Allah as a Helper.
