An-Nisa · Juz 5 · Qur'an Tafseer

Tafseer Surah an-Nisa Ayaat 73 – 74

Sign of Hypocrites

After mentioning their joy for not being killed or defeated in Jihad due to their lack of participation, Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala then says next,

“But if a bounty comes to you from Allah”

such as victory, triumph and booty,

“he would surely say – as if there had never been ties of affection between you and him”

meaning, as if he was not a follower of your religion,

“Oh! I wish I had been with them; then I would have achieved a great success.”

by being assigned a share of the booty and taking possession of that share. This is his ultimate aim and objective.

Tafseer Surah an-Nisa Ayah 74
The Encouragement to Participation in Jihad

Allah then said in ayah 74,

“So fight”

This is being said to the believer with an aversion to fighting,

“those who trade the life of this world with the Hereafter”

referring to those sell their religion for the meager goods of the world, and they only do this because of their disbelief and lack of faith. Allah then said;

“And whoever fights in the cause of Allah, and is killed or gets victory, We shall bestow on him a great reward.”

meaning, whoever fights in the cause of Allah, whether he was killed or triumphant, he will earn an immense compensation and a great reward with Allah.

It means that let them clearly understand that those people, who hanker after worldly benefits only, are not fit to fight in the way of Allah. On the contrary, only those people are worthy of fighting in the way of Allah who have no other desire or object than to please Him and who have perfect belief in Allah and the Hereafter and are, therefore, ready to sacrifice all interests and all chances of prosperity and enjoyment in this world for the sake of pleasing their Lord. They sincerely believe that their sacrifices will not go in vain in the Hereafter, even if they might not have been- “successful” in this life.

Thus, it is obvious that those who attach real importance only to their worldly interests cannot tread the path of Allah.”

The Two Sahihs recorded, “Allah has guaranteed the Mujahid in His cause that He will either bring death to him, admitting into Paradise; or, He will help him return safely to his home with whatever reward and booty he gained.”
