Tafseer Surah an-Nisa Ayah 120 and 121

The Person who Listens to Shaytan Suffers Loss

In the previous ayah we learned about the tactics that Shaytan applies to lead people to misguidance. In ayah 120, Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala explains the true reality of Shaytan,

يَعِدُهُمْ وَيُمَنِّيهِمْ وَمَا يَعِدُهُمْ الشَّيْطَـنُ إِلاَّ غُرُوراً

“He promises them and arouses (sinful) desires in them. And Shaytan does not promise them except deception.”

Surely, Shaytan deceitfully promises his supporters and tempts them into believing that they are winners in this and the Hereafter. He fools people by saying that the Day of Resurrection is too far away and there is always time to repent later. Don’t repent right now. He tempts people by making them a victim of materialism. He makes them get lost in the pleasures of dunya. A person falls for one trap then another and so on. Eventually, one day the man is unable to even show his face to other people.

Narrating a scene of the Day of Resurrection, Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala states in Surah Ibraheem ayah 22, “And Shaytan will say when the matter has been decided: Verily, Allah promised you a promise of truth. And I too promised you, but I betrayed you. I had no authority over you. But I had no authority over you except that I invited you, and you responded to me. So do not blame me; but blame yourselves. I cannot be called to your aid, nor can you be called to my aid. Indeed, I deny your association of me [with Allah] before. Indeed, for the wrongdoers is a painful punishment.”

In ayah 121, Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala talks about those who like and prefer what Shaytan is promising and assuring them about,

أُوْلَـئِكَ مَأْوَاهُمْ جَهَنَّمُ وَلاَ يَجِدُونَ عَنْهَا مَحِيصاً

“Those will have their abode in Hell and they will not find any escape from it.”

On the Day of Resurrection, the abode of such people will be Hellfire and there will be no evasion from it.

In Surah Hajj ayah 22, Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala states, “Every time they want to get out of Hellfire from anguish, they will be returned to it, and [it will said]: Taste the punishment of the Burning Fire!”
