An-Nisa · Juz 5 · Qur'an Tafseer

Ibraheem aalyhi sallam is Allah’s Khaleel

According to tafseer of Ibn Katheer, in ayah 125 when Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala says,

He is referring to Muhammad sallAllahu aalyhi wa sallam and his Ummah. This can be proven through ayah 68 of Surah Ale-Imran where Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala says,

“Indeed, the most worthy of Ibraheem among the people are those who followed him [in submission to Allah] and this Prophet.”

Similarly, in Surah al-Baqarah ayah 135 Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala says,

“Then, We have sent the Revelation to you (saying): Follow the religion of Ibraheem the Haneef (Monotheist) and he was not of the Mushrikeen.”

The Haneef, intentionally and with knowledge, avoids Shirk, he goes attentively to the truth, allowing no one to hinder him or stop him from it.

Allah’s statement in Surah an-Nisa ayah 125,

encourages following Ibraheem Al-Khaleel, because he was and still is an Imam whose conduct is followed and imitated. Indeed, Ibraheem reached the ultimate closeness to Allah that the servants seek, for he attained the grade of Khaleel, which is the highest grade of love. He acquired all this due to his obedience to His Lord, just as Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala has described him,

“And of Ibraheem, the one who fulfilled” [Surah an-Najm : 37]

“And (remember) when the Lord of Ibraheem tried him with (certain) commands, which he fulfilled” [Surah al-Baqarah ayah 124]

“Verily, Ibraheem was an Ummah, obedient to Allah, a Haneef, and he was not one of the Mushrikeen.” [Surah an-Nahl : 120]

Al-Bukhari recorded that Amr bin Maymun said that when Mu`adh came back from Yemen, he led them in the Fajr prayer and recited,

One of the men present commented, “Surely, the eye of Ibraheem’s mother has been comforted.”

Ibraheem was called Allah’s Khaleel due to his Lord’s great love towards him, on account of the acts of obedience he performed that Allah loves and prefers. We should mention here that in the two saheehs, it is recorded that Abu Sa`id Al-Khudri said that when the Messenger of Allah, sallAllahu aalyhi wa sallam gave them his last speech, he said,

“O people! If I were to take a Khaleel from the people of the earth, I would have taken Abu Bakr bin Abi Quhafah as my Khaleel. However, your companion (meaning himself) is the Khaleel of Allah.”

Jundub bin Abdullah Al-Bajali, Abdullah bin Amr bin Al-`As and Abdullah bin Mas`ud narrated that the Prophet said,

“Allah has chosen me as His Khaleel, just as He has chosen Ibraheem as His Khaleel.”

May Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala enable us to follow the Sunnah and footsteps of Prophet Ibraheem aalyhi salaam and Prophet Muhammad sallAllahu aalyhi wa sallam, aameen.
