The Prohibition of Wilayah with the Disbelievers
Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala forbids His believing servants from taking the disbelievers as friends instead of the believers. This includes being friends and associates of the disbelievers, advising them, being intimate with them and exposing the secrets of the believers to them.
يَـأَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ ءَامَنُواْ لاَ تَتَّخِذُواْ الْكَـفِرِينَ أَوْلِيَآءَ مِن دُونِ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ
“O you who believe! Do not take disbelievers as friends instead of believers.”
Some believers due to a weakness in their emaan take disbelievers as their awliyah. A wali is close or intimate friend whose advice you take. The person to whom expose your secrets. So Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala is warning against making the kafireen our friends. This similar to what Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala said in Surah Ale-Imran ayah 28, “Let not the believers take the disbelievers as friends instead of the believers, and whoever does that, will never be helped by Allah in any way, except if you indeed fear a danger from them. And Allah warns you against Himself.” This is why Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala said here,
أَتُرِيدُونَ أَن تَجْعَلُواْ للَّهِ عَلَيْكُمْ سُلْطَاناً مُّبِيناً
“Do you wish to offer Allah a manifest Sultan against yourselves”
This means proof against you that warrants receiving His torment. Ibn Abi Hatim narrated that Ibn Abbas radhiAllahu anhu commented سُلْطَاناً مُّبِيناً “The word Sultan in the Qur’an means proof. ”
Do you want to offer Allah a clear evidence that makes you worthy of His punishment and anger? The one who loves Allah will love those people who worship Allah. The one who loves dunya he will love those who are successful in dunya.
