Tafseer Surah an-Nisa Ayah 170

Believe in Allah, His Messenger and in His Book Benefits Us

After answering the objections raised by the Jews and confirming the Prophethood of Muhammad sallAllahu aalyhi wa sallam, the Qur’an carries the message of Allah to all human beings wherever they may be as they are its direct addressees.

In this ayah, Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala said:

يأَيُّهَا النَّاسُ قَدْ جَآءَكُمُ الرَّسُولُ بِالْحَقِّ مِن رَّبِّكُمْ فَـَامِنُواْ خَيْراً لَّكُمْ

“O mankind! Verily, there has come to you the Messenger with the truth from your Lord, so believe in him, it is better for you.”

This Ayah means, Muhammad has come to you with guidance, the religion of truth and clear proof from Allah. Therefore, believe in what he has brought you and follow him, for this is better for you. Your salvation lies nowhere but in your belief in the Prophethood of Muhammad sallAllahu aalyhi wa sallam, so believe and prosper.

Why is it better for us? It is so because, the Book that Prophet sallAllahu aalyhi wa sallam brought contains all the instructions that we will ever need. Take Surah an-Nisa for example, it talks about the rights of women and orphans, inheritance, marriage and family set up. When we don’t read the Book or deny what’s in it, how can we live a righteous life?

Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala says next,

وَإِن تَكْفُرُواْ فَإِنَّ للَّهِ مَا فِى السَّمَـوَتِ وَالاٌّرْضِ

“But if you disbelieve, then certainly to Allah belongs all that is in the heavens and the earth.”

As for those choose to disbelieve, they lose everything while Allah loses nothing. Allah is far too rich than to need you or your faith, and no harm could ever affect Him because of your disbelief. With His limitless domain and power, who can conceive of bringing any loss or harm to Him? This is something the disbelievers should worry about.  Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala ends the ayah reminding us:

وَكَانَ اللَّهُ عَلِيماًحَكِيماً

“And Allah is Ever All-Knowing, All-Wise.”

He knows those who deserve to be guided, and He will guide them. He also knows those who deserve deviation, and He leads them to it. He is wise in His statements, actions, legislation and all that He decrees. Let them be certain that Allah knows everything about their believing and disbelieving and let not the delay or decrease in punishment in this work put them on the wrong foot for He is All-Wise too and does what His wisdom allows to prevail.

LESSONS:

– When a person believes in Allah and the Messenger, sallAllahu aalyhi wa sallam, and follows the Qur’an, such a person is providing no benefit to Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala or Rasoolullah. But in fact, he is benefiting himself.

– Having ilm is what saves a person. When we read the Book, we are gaining ilm. If we get lost and don’t know how to find our way, where would we get? We will be completely lost. Therefore, we need ilm as well as a strong connection with Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala.
