In this ayah Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala criticizes those who ignore His commandments,
أَفَحُكْمَ الْجَـهِلِيَّةِ يَبْغُونَ وَمَنْ أَحْسَنُ مِنَ اللَّهِ حُكْماً لِّقَوْمٍ يُوقِنُونَ
“Do they then seek the judgment of (the days of) ignorance. And who is better in judgment than Allah for a people who have firm faith.”
When we leave the commands of Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala we think we are becoming modern. Bringing television in our house, taking off the hijab, shaving off the beard, dancing to music, depositing money at a bank, we think we are preparing ourselves for the future.
However, Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala says by ignoring the commands to do righteous deeds and indulging in the prohibitions do you want to return to the times of ignorance?
During the time of Jahiliyyah, the people used to abide by the misguidance and ignorance that they invented by sheer opinion and lusts. They forgot about worshiping one God and fell for paganism. They inherited their women and deprived them of any inheritance. They buried their daughters alive. When the Prophet sallAllahu aalyhi wa sallam came he eradicted the lawlessness and taught them the commands of Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala.
So Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala is asking us are you trying to go backwards? In the days of jahiliyah people used to bury their daughters because to them it was an embarrassment. Today, we have developed abortion. When you don’t wish to have a child eat a pill or abort the child. Are we advancing or going backwards?
At that time people had no knowledge, today we have various sources of knowledge yet we are going backwards.
People who have the yaqeen[firm believe] that what Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala is given is the best are the ones who change themselves and not alter the law of Allah.
