Tafseer Surah al-Ma’idah Ayah 60

People who Mock Islam, the Prophet or the Signs of Allah are Worst

Again, Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala is commanding the Prophet sallAllahu aalyhi wa sallam to ask question from the People of the Book. He says,

قُلْ هَلْ أُنَبِّئُكُمْ بِشَرٍّ مِّن ذلِكَ مَثُوبَةً عِندَ اللَّهِ

“Say: ‘Shall I inform you of something worse than that, regarding the recompense from Allah….”

The word unabbiokum is from the root letters noon-ba-hamza. The word nabah means important or relevant news.

The reason behind beginning this ayah with “Shall I inform you” is what we see repetitively in Qur’an. This is done in order to arouse the curiosity of the addressee.

The word dhalika in the ayah has been used to indicate salah, as we read in ayah the Jews and the Christians mocked at salah. mocking an action means mocking at the one performing it. Mocking adhan meant mocking the believers or the Muslims because they disliked them. When someone dislikes another he desires inflicting some harm.

The word mathooba is from the root letters tha-wau-ba which means recompense, punishment or penalty.

Prophet sallAllahu aalyhi wa sallam is being instructed to ask if the People of the Book wish to be informed about a penalty that they got. This penalty was much worse than what they inflicted the Muslims with.

Muslims are performing their salah – a virtuous act, yet you cause them harm, do you remember what you did for which you were punished by Allah? What did you do in the sight of Allah?

“….those who incurred the curse of Allah and His wrath, and those of whom He transformed into monkeys and swine, and those who worshipped Taghoot….”

They were cursed by Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala because of the wrong things that they were doing. Being cursed by Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala means being deprived of His mercy.

Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala then mentions the punishment that they were inflicted with. They were transformed into monkeys and swine. Why were they given this punishment? We read earlier in Surah al-Baqarah, the incident of Sabbath.

The main business of the Jews was fishery. They were forbidden to be occupied with their business on Saturday that was chosen as their religious day. To test them in their faith, this was also the day when most fish swam in the sea. The Jews couldn’t let go of this opportunity. They saw profits. Therefore, in order to take benefit  they would lay their nets on Friday night while being away for their Saturday prayers. They were not physically conducting their business, but mentally they were occupied in something other than worship.

Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala transformed them into monkeys. Monkeys are not actually humans, but they act like them. Similarly, a swine cannot differentiate between his need and lust. He eats everything including its children and its own filth.

Allah subhanahu wa ta’alas reward and punishment is similar to the act performed.

They were cursed and transformed into monkeys and swine. And what is worst? That they worshipped taghoot. Taghoot is anything taken as deity other than Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala.

أُوْلَـئِكَ شَرٌّ مَّكَاناً وَأَضَلُّ عَن سَوَآءِ السَّبِيلِ

“….such are worse in rank, and far more astray from the straight path.”

Their rank in the Hereafter is much worse than the believers and they are more astray. Does that mean the believers are going to be worse too or they are astray too? No. This is only for the sake of comparison.

LESSONS:

– People who mock at Prophet sallAllahu aalyhi wa sallam, the believers or the symbols of the deen are worse in rank so we should never be deluded by their present state. There may be people who appear successful in dunya but in reality they are very low.

– People who are worse in rank are those who have curse of Allah and His wrath upon them; have been transformed into non-human form and worship taghoot. Who were these people? They were the Jews; People of the Book; the knowledgeable people. When someone doesn’t live his life according to the commands of Allah or brings changes in the teachings of the Prophet sallAllahu aalyhi wa sallam, then this is what their punishment is going to be.

– If Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala has given us the Book, then it is our responsibility to stop our non-serious attitude and follow the Book firmly. If a nation abandons the Book of Allah, then they are removed from the mercy of Allah. If one is distanced from Allah, his du’as are not accepted. He keeps falling into one difficulty after another. When the Qur’an is being recited or Adhan is going on if people start joking then what are they invoking?
