Tafseer Surah al-Ma’idah Ayah 113

Sending Down the Ma’idah

In ayah 113, we read the reason why the disciples of Eesa aalyhi salaam made such a demand.

They said: ‘We wish to eat thereof so that our hearts become content, and to know that you have indeed told us the truth and that we ourselves be its witnesses.’”

The reason that they gave for making such a demand was that when they witness the table spread descending from heaven as sustenance they will be assured that Eesa aalyhi salaam has told them the truth. This miracle will testify that it is a sign from Allah as a proof and evidence that he is a Prophet. And they will attest to the truth of what he has brought to them. Some scholars have explained “…we wish to eat thereof so that our hearts become content…” as that the disciples had a desire to eat something special that will satisfy their hearts. There was no reason behind making such a demand other than eating some tasty food.

This is our behavior too. Sometimes we too make such demands. In order to eat something special we can waste two hours waiting for our turn at a restaurant but we cannot sit for two hours in a masjid or read Qur’an for the same amount of time. Good food is encouraged however we should also adopt some moderation when it comes to eating. How much time and money do we spend on cooking or eating food, and how much money do we spend in the cause of Allah?

Is food that important that it becomes center of our lives? Is food so important that we tell our friends what we ate?

  2. I needed some help.
I did Istikhara regarding a problem I’ve been dealing with and I got this Ayat in reply. What exactly does it mean to have this Quran Ayat in reply? Please do let me know if you can help, thank you.

    1. Asalaam o alaykum wa rahmatullah,

We are sorry, but we cannot interpret the meaning in relation to the problem that you did istekhara for. Through istekhara we seek Allah’s guidance in matters that we are uncertain about. Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala will either make the matter easier for you or turn your heart to something else. Without knowing your situation we cannot really tell. You will have to discuss this with someone you trust and who is also knowledgeable in Deen.

For the ayah, we can say it teaches us that we need to focus more on our Hereafter than the joys and sorrows of this fleeting world. Work on your relationship with Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala. If you’re not regular with your daily prayers, start from there. Ask Him to distance you from that which is not good for you and take you closer to that which is best for you. (Please note that we are not judging you, these are just some suggestions.)

May Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala help you and guide you to what is best for your worldly life and the Hereafter, aameen.

      Ma’asalaam
