Sending Down the Ma’idah
After hearing the request of the disciples, Eesa aalyhi salaam supplicated to Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala in the following manner:
قَالَ عِيسَى ابْنُ مَرْيَمَ اللَّهُمَّ رَبَّنَآ أَنزِلْ عَلَيْنَا مَآئِدَةً مِّنَ السَّمَآءِ تَكُونُ لَنَا عِيداً لاًّوَّلِنَا وَءَاخِرِنَا وَءَايَةً مِّنْكَ وَارْزُقْنَا وَأَنتَ خَيْرُ الرَّازِقِينَ
“Eesa, son of Maryam, said: ‘O Allah, our Lord! Send down upon us a table laid with food from the sky. It will be Eid for us — for the first and the last of us — a sign from You; and provide us sustenance, for You are the Best of sustainers.’”
Since it was a halal demand, Eesa aalyhi salaam made du’a on their behalf. On a special day, it makes sense to eat good food but it doesn’t make sense to drive for 2 hours every day to eat something special. Therefore Eesa aalyhi salaam said, “It will be a day of Eid for us.” i.e. a day of celebration. We will rejoice in it. People of that era and those after them will celebrate on this day every year. It will also be a sign for them to strengthen their faith.
Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala is the Best of Sustainers. He provides us abundant rizq. Each fruit is different from the other in color, shape, taste and texture.
– The Messengers were not able to produce miracles by themselves. Whenever their nations demanded a miracle they made du’a to Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala. If Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala willed He would show that miracle and if He doesn’t will nothing will happen. Messengers don’t have this ability on their own.
– We learn about the etiquettes of making du’a. Eesa aalyhi salaam mentioned Allah’s Attributes before making du’a. You are our Creator. You are our Rabb. When making du’a we should remember how is it going to benefit me in the hereafter. Don’t just think about the life of this world.
– Our sole focus should not be on eating or enjoying food. We should observe moderation. When we start enjoying our palette we do excess. We should remember this is not the purpose of our life.
– Bani Israel were blessed with miscellaneous miracles.
