Reality of Life and the Hereafter
Talking about the denial by the disbelievers Allah subhanahu wa ta`ala says,
وَقَالُواْ إِنْ هِىَ إِلاَّ حَيَاتُنَا الدُّنْيَا وَمَا نَحْنُ بِمَبْعُوثِينَ
And they said, “There is no (other life) but our (present) life of this world, and never shall we be resurrected.”
Meaning for them there is only one life. There was no life before this and there won’t be a hereafter. Life here is the life and they were not going to be raised again.
The word dunya is from the root letters dal-noon-wau and it means “closeness or lowliness”. Dunya is both closer in time (than the Akhirah) and lowly in status.
A question arises here: When they have seen their return to life on the day of Qiyamah how can it be possible that they would deny it once they have been sent back into the world? It is because of their nature. Their wickedness will prevent them from accepting the truth. It is similar to the belief of some contemporary disbelievers and wrongdoers today who despite their knowledge of Islamic realities are stuck in their state of denial.
About them Allah subhanahu wa ta`ala says in Surah Naml Ayah 14,
وَجَحَدُواْ بِهَا وَاسْتَيْقَنَتْهَآ أَنفُسُهُمْ ظُلْماً وَعُلُوّاً
“And they belied them wrongfully and arrogantly, though they themselves were convinced thereof.”
The next question would be why is it that a person denies the Hereafter? It is because a person is not prepared for their accountability. If he believes in accountability he won’t be able to do anything and everything that he wants to do. He will have to live within certain boundaries and be conscious.
How can a person be content with this worldly life? This hayat of dunya is so lowly and imperfect. Sometimes we are happy apparently but internally we are feeling miserable. Sometimes we are pleased internally but on the surface we look wretched.
Allah subhanahu wa ta`ala then says,
If you could but see when they will stand before their Lord! He will say, “Is not this the truth?” They will say, “Yes, by our Lord!” He will then say, “So taste you the torment because you used not to believe.”
They will be detained before Allah subhanahu wa ta`ala, and He would ask them if this Day of Judgment that they had been denying is not real. They will affirm its truth. And Allah subhanahu wa ta`ala will tell them to taste the torment for their disbelieve. Admitting the reality of the Hereafter then will not help.
– In this dunya a person can deny all he wants but on that Day he will have to accept. Today we refuse to accept our responsibility, our mistake or acknowledge accountability but on that Day we will have no choice.
Sometimes we know in our hearts that what a person is doing or saying is right but we refuse to accept it. We pretend as if the reality doesn’t exist. People refuse to acknowledge the rights of others or their supremacy over us.
– Confession in the akhirah doesn’t benefit anyone. By then it will be too late.
