Al Asma Al Husna - Names of Allah · Knowing Allah

Al-Mutakabbir – the Supreme

Al-Mutakabbir

The word Mutakabbir comes from the root letters ka-ba-ra and it has the following classical Arabic connotations:

– to be great in size, rank or dignity,
– to be great in size, to be vast, formidable,
– to be great in age, oldest,
– to be great in dignity, noble, majestic,
– to be great in learning, most knowing,
– to have right above all others

Different Meanings of the Name: Al-Mutakabbir

Mutakabbir from Kibria
Some scholars hold that the word “Al-Mutakabbir” is derived from ‘Al-Kibria’. Kibria means greatness and sovereignty, and it encompasses the meanings of the perfection of one’s self and existence. Nobody can be described as such except Allah subhanahu wa ta`ala.

In Qur’an, the word “Kibria” appears in Surah Yunus Ayah 78,

 قَالُواْ أَجِئْتَنَا لِتَلْفِتَنَا عَمَّا وَجَدْنَا عَلَيْهِ ءابَاءَنَا وَتَكُونَ لَكُمَا الْكِبْرِيَآءُ فِى الاٌّرْضِ وَمَا نَحْنُ لَكُمَا بِمُؤْمِنِينَ

“They said, ‘Have you come to us to turn us away from that upon which we found our fathers and so that you two may have grandeur in the land? And we are not believers in you.’”

His Sublimity is Infinite
Allah subhanahu wa ta`ala is Mutakabbir in the sense that His divine sublimity is Infinite, He is Great, the One Whose divine greatness is Infinite. Thus ‘Al-Mutakabbir’ (the Sublime) is God, the King Whose sovereignty never perishes, the Great, in whose Kingdom nothing happens except by His leave, the One, the Omnipotent.

Mutakabbir from Kabeer
Another meaning of the name al-Mutakabbir is derived from the Arabic word ‘Al-Kabeer’ (the Great). Allahu Akbar – Allah is the Greatest – also comes from the same root, ka-ba-ra.

Mutakabbir is far from Being Unjust
Al-Mutakabbir is Allah Who is far exalted above being unjust or unfair to His slaves.

Imperishable
Al-Mutakabbir indicates that His sovereignty, dominion and greatness are imperishable.

Far from Any Imperfection
Another meaning of Al-Mutakabbir is: the great and sublime in the way that sublimity comes from self-existence and self-guidance. Allah has a free will, and Al-Mutakabbir is who is far above any kind of imperfection or defect that does not befit His divine perfection.

Living By Allah’s Name Al-Mutakabbir

Be Humble. Knowing that Allah subhanahu wa ta`ala is the Supreme and all matters and all other beings are in His control our reliance should be on Al-Mutakabbir and not anyone else. When we approach the Salah and routine matters of life we should humble ourselves knowing Allah subhanahu wa ta`ala is watching us and others.

Respect Others. Don’t look down upon others because of their little knowledge, wealth, status or beauty. It is Allah Who decides what to bless someone with. People don’t choose to be born in a poor family or have dark skin color. It was Allah’s “decision”, therefore when we look down upon others we are actually making fun of Al-Mutakabbir’s decision.

Battle Arrogance. Knowing that only Allah subhanahu wa ta`ala is Above All we should not give room to arrogance in our hearts. Iblees displayed arrogance and what was his fate?

Seek Protection. Since He is the Greatest ask Him to protect you from the evil of others as well as whisperings of your own heart.

O Al-Mutakabbir, guide our hearts and actions to humility, protect us from arrogance and looking down on others, and make us of those who are blessed to witness Your Grandeur in Paradise, aameen.
