[Reflections] Surah al-Baqarah Ayah 45

An often quoted Ayah on Sabr is Surah al-Baqarah’s Ayah 45,

وَاسْتَعِينُواْ بِالصَّبْرِ وَالصَّلَوةِ
“And seek help through patience and prayer…”

Meaning when you are being tested by something do sabr. First “you” have to do sabr. Then if you fail to observe patience then seek help through prayer. Make du`a in your prayer that Allah subhanahu wa ta`ala grants you sabr.

However, this Ayah doesn’t end here. It is often partially quoted when talking about patience. The remaining part of the Ayah says,

وَإِنَّهَا لَكَبِيرَةٌ إِلاَّ عَلَى الْخَـشِعِينَ
“…and indeed, it is difficult except for the humbly submissive [to Allah].”

Salah is your key to sabr. But Salah is easy only for those who are Khashi`een. Who are the Khashi`een? Those who have khusho. And what is khusho?

Khusho is that state of the heart which is also visible on the outer surface such that when a person talks he is “aware” of Allah’s Watchful gaze. When he deals with others he knows Allah is watching me. He approaches Salah in such a state that his heart is humbled. Such a person realizes he is an insignificant being and very small in comparison to Allah subhanahu wa ta`ala. He acknowledges his weakness. At his prayer rug, he is standing before the Creator of all the worlds, the One Who provides him and countless other beings that we can’t even name. This person rushes to the prayer mat as soon as the call for prayer is given.

If the subject is not clear with the word “Khashi`een”, Allah subhanahu wa ta`ala further describes it in the following Ayah. He says,

الَّذِينَ يَظُنُّونَ أَنَّهُم مُّلَـقُوا رَبِّهِمْ وَأَنَّهُمْ إِلَيْهِ رَجِعُونَ
“Who are certain that they will meet their Lord and that they will return to Him.”

Meaning that even if a person turns away from the daily five obligatory meetings with Allah then he should know that one day [eventually] he will return to his Lord. Then how will he face Him?

Muqatil bin Hayan said that this Ayah means, “Utilize patience and the obligatory prayer in seeking the Hereafter.”

Let’s not make approaching Salah a difficult matter.. Let’s humble ourselves before we finally return to the Creator.
