[Sunnah Series] Going to the Masjid

► Go early, as the Prophet salAllahu ‘alayhi wa sallam said:

“If mankind knew what (reward) was in the call and in the first row and found no other way to get that (reward) except by drawing lots, then they would have drawn lots…

And if they knew what (reward) was in praying Salah Adh-Zhuhr in its earliest time [Tahjeer] they would have raced for it…

And if they knew the reward of Al-Isha and Al-Fajr prayer in congregation, they would come to offer them even if they had to crawl.” [Al-Bukhari, the Book of Athaan, Hadeeth 615]

Imam An-Nawawi said the word Tahjeer means to be early for the prayer.

[Is it permissible to offer prayer in congregation at home, and not go to the mosque?]

► Walk with Sakeenah and Waqaar

If you hear the Iqamah, then walk to the prayer with Sakeenah [move calmly and avoid frivolity] and Waqaar [lower the gaze and voice, and avoid excessive looking around.][Bukhari, the Book of Athaan, Hadeeth 636]

► Walk to the Masjid

The jurists have stipulated that in order to increase the reward, it has been recommended in the Sunnah to go to the Masjid walking and to avoid haste. The Shar’iah texts show the many merits in walking to the Masjid.

The Prophet salAllahu ‘alayhi wa sallam said:

“Shall I not show you something by which Allah removes your wrongdoings and raises your level (in Paradise)?”

The Companions radhiAllahu ‘anhum said, “Yes, O Messenger of Allah!” He mentioned that from those things is taking many steps to the Masjid.  [Muslim, the Book of Purification, Hadeeth 251]

► Supplicate when entering the Masjid

When one of you enters the Masjid, send salah [recite Durood] on the Prophet salAllahu ‘alayhi wa sallam and say:

when entering and leaving the masjid

[An-Nasa’i, the Book of Masajid, Hadeeth 728. Ibn Majah, the Book of Masajid and Congregational Prayer, Hadeeth 771]

► Enter with the right foot

Anas bin Malik radhiAllahu ‘anhu said: From the Sunnah is that if you enter the Masjid, enter with your right foot and when you leave, leave with your left foot. [Mustadarak Al-Hakim, the Book of the Imam, the Prayer and the Congregation, Hadeeth 822]

► Pray Tahiyaat Al-Masjid upon entering

The Prophet salAllahu ‘alayhi wa sallam said: When one of you enters the Masjid, do not sit until you pray two Rak’ah of prayer.

Imam Ash-Shafi’ said: Tahiyaat Al-Masjid is legislated, even in the forbidden times.

Also, Imam Al-Haafidh bin Hajar said: The people of Fatwaa [the scholars] agreed that Tahiyaat Al-Masjid is Sunnah.

[Ruling on Tahiyaat Al-Masjid (greeting the mosque)]

► Proceed to the first row

If mankind knew what (reward) was in the call (pronouncing the Athaan) and in the first row and they found no other way to get that (reward) except by drawing lots, and then they would have drawn lots…
