In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
Surah Aal-Imran Ayaat 86-89
Ibn Jarir recorded that Ibn ‘Abbas (RA) said, “A man from the Ansar embraced Islam, but later reverted and joined the polytheists. He, later on, became sorry and sent his people to ask the Messenger of Allah salAllahu ‘alayhi wa sallam if he could repent. Then, Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala revealed these ayaat and his people sent word to him and re-embraced Islam.”
This is the wording recorded by An-Nasa’i, Al-Hakim and Ibn Hibban. Al-Hakim said, “Its chain is Sahih and they did not record it.”
Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala says, “How shall Allah guide a people who disbelieved after their belief and had witnessed that the Messenger is true and clear signs had come to them?” It means, the proofs and evidences were established, testifying to the truth of what the Messenger salAllahu ‘alayhi wa sallam was sent with. The truth was explained to them, but they reverted to the darkness of polytheism. Therefore, how can such people deserve guidance after they willingly leapt into utter blindness? This is why Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala says, “And Allah does not guide the wrongdoing people.”
“Those – their recompense will be that upon them is the curse of Allah and the angels and the people, all together.” Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala and the entire creation curses them. They will abide therein in the curse.
“The punishment will not be lightened for them, nor will they be reprieved,” for the torment will not be lessened, not even for an hour. “Except for those who repent after that and correct themselves. For indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.” The ayah indicates that Allah’s kindness, graciousness, compassion, mercy, and favor on His creatures when they repent to Him, for He forgives them in this case. The moment a person turns back to Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala and sincerely commits to reforming himself he is forgiven, subhanAllah!
Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala is willing to forgive people and giving them a chance before death comes.
When a person denies the truth after knowing it is an unbeliever. Because the truth reached him, he recognized it and rejected it. The Jews moved and settled to Madinah waiting for the Last Messenger salAllahu ‘alayhi wa sallam but when the messenger came from the Arabs despite recognizing him they refused to believe in him out of arrogance. Many contemporary scholars have acknowledged the truthfulness and leadership skills of Prophet Muhammad salAllahu ‘alayhi wa sallam but they did not accept Islam.
A person who claims to love Islam but refuses to follow its commandments is doing fisq. Man does not want to make sacrifices wherever he sees he will have to make efforts and strive, he leaves religion.
Repenting here means leaving kufr, believing in Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala, believing in Muhammad salAllahu ‘alayhi wa sallam and doing righteous deeds
