Tafseer Surah Aal-Imran Ayah 164
This ayah speaks of the great favor Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala has shown to the Muslims. This favor is the gift of sending Prophet Muhammad salAllahu ‘alayhi wa sallam.
Mufti Muhammad Shafi Usmani explains: Prophets come into the world to nurture the human spirit correctly. It means to mold human beings such that they are beneficial to the creation that they do not out like the beasts hurting others in pursuit of their desires. Instead, they should think about their end and start working for the eternal life of the Hereafter. This was the mission that Prophet Muhammad salAllahu ‘alayhi wa sallam was sent with. The men that he nurtured formed a society of human being, which supersedes even the angels. The earth or the heavens had not seen such before; each one of them was a living proof of Rasoolullah’s wisdom and leadership.
What happens after them?
Those who sincerely seek guidance and high ranks in the Hereafter can benefit from the teachings that Rasoolullah salAllahu ‘alayhi wa sallam left behind, which were implemented, preserved and carried forward by the Companions radhiAllahu ‘anhum. These teachings are there for the entire humanity to benefit from. Therefore, his having graced this world and his being born generous is a great favor of Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala.
Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala says,
لَقَدْ مَنَّ اللَّهُ عَلَى الْمُؤْمِنِينَ إِذْ بَعَثَ فِيهِمْ رَسُولًا مِّنْ أَنفُسِهِمْ
“Certainly did Allah confer [great] favor upon the believers when He sent among them a Messenger from themselves…”
It means Rasoolullah salAllahu ‘alayhi wa sallam was a human being and not light or an angel. He was an Arab and spoke the same language as the locals. This is an important element of Da’wah. To be able to call others to goodness one must have an affection or a bond with the people that he wishes to invite. One must know the language and culture of the people so that he can advise them according to their problems.
Allah’s favor is perfected when His Messenger to the people is of their own kind so that they are able to talk to him and inquire about the meanings of Allah’s Word. This is why Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala said,
“…reciting to them His ayaat and purifying them and teaching them the Book and wisdom, although they had been before in manifest error.”
We learn that when doing Da’wah to the people, one must start from the Qur’an. It is the Book of Allah – this is the first thing that people need to know. We get into fiqh issues and difference of opinion and end up arguing with others, closing all doors to Da’wah. Start from the Qur’an. Perfect your recitation and learn the meaning of the Book so that you can teach the right thing to the people.
Tazkiya or purification, often of the soul means doing righteous deeds and coming out of all kinds of evil that a person is indulged in. This is how the hearts are purified and cleansed of the sins that have corrupted them. This is a responsibility that was assigned to the Prophet salAllahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, which he performed dutifully.
The scholars explain Hikmah as the Qur’an and Sunnah because whatever Rasoolullah salAllahu ‘alayhi wa sallam taught us was wise. Wisdom is a blessing of Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala that we should ask for. Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala sent us two sources of seeking wisdom and they are the Qur’an and Sunnah. If we gain knowledge of these two sources and implement the teachings in our life there is no doubt that our life will become peaceful.
Before the coming of the Prophet salAllahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, the people were lost in error and ignorance. Therefore, his coming is a favor of Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala upon the people, particularly the believers.
