Life-Lessons: Juz 14

Don’t be Distressed, Allah is by your side

Surah Al-Hijr Verse# 97-99

وَلَقَدْ نَعْلَمُ أَنَّكَ يَضِيقُ صَدْرُكَ بِمَا يَقُولُونَ 97

We certainly know that your heart is truly distressed by what they say.

فَسَبِّحْ بِحَمْدِ رَبِّكَ وَكُن مِّنَ ٱلسَّـٰجِدِينَ 98

So glorify the praises of your Lord and be one of those who ˹always˺ pray,

وَٱعْبُدْ رَبَّكَ حَتَّىٰ يَأْتِيَكَ ٱلْيَقِينُ 99

and worship your Lord until the inevitable comes your way.

Bismillah.

The blessed Qur’an is full of ayahs of healing and condolences for us when it comes to being hurt by people especially those near to us. Be it by words or by expressions or acts. Similarly, these last few ayahs of Surah Al-Hijr are full of positivity for Prophet Muhammad Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallam who was being hurt by his people when he invited them to Islam and the worship of Allah alone and to stop idol worship. Allah Subhanahu wa Ta’ala really beautifully and completely understood that the Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallam was really hurt and sad, says to him that Allah knows that oh prophet your heartaches due to what they say (the non-muslims). So don’t worry about it, ignore them and do tasbeeh of your Lord Allah glorify Him and be of those who prostrate to Him. As in giving him the perfect therapy for getting rid of all the hurtful speech of the non-muslims. And then Allah further says to prophet Muhammad Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallam to worship Him until death comes to him.

These beautiful verses give us some really practical rules to adhere to and live by when dealing with toxic people who will be abusive and hurtful to you no matter what. So rather than defending yourself all the time or being their like(that is being angry and abusive too), Allah tells us through the example of His beloved Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallam that we should not respond to such people nor react to them rather be quiet and in those times especially glorify Allah and be of those who seek Allah’s help through prostration.

It is reported by Abu Sa’id al-Khudri that Messenger of Allah, peace, and blessings be upon him, said,

“Whoever humbles himself by a degree for Allah, glory be to Him, Allah will raise him by a degree. Whoever is arrogant to Allah by a degree, Allah will lower him by a degree until he is made ‘the lowest of the low.’”

(Sunan Ibn Majah: 4176)

Life lessons

  • So, we learn when people hurt us, we should humble ourselves to Allah and see how Allah defends and saves us from the hurtful and abusive behaviors of people.  Be courageous like Prophet Mohammed Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallam and leave all to Allah. He will take care of you.
  • Many women, especially those living in joint families, experience such tough situations in their day-to-day lives, in which they face arguments, rude comments, or bitter behavior. In such circumstances, remind yourself of these beautiful and consoling verses and do not respond with ill words, and do not let their words hurt you. Pray to Allah, make more tasbeeh of Him and prostrate to Him even more. Implementing this in our daily lives will make our lives much more hassle-free, free of grudges, ill feelings, and quarrels.
  • By continuing this, not only do we attain peace but also Allah will elevate our ranks and be our shield at all times. He will instill our love and respect in people’s hearts just like He did in the case of Prophet Muhammad Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallam by giving him power, respect, and love of all his people till the end of time.

Allahu Akbar!!

May Allah help us implement this beautiful role of conduct in our daily lives getting the reward of Allah’s help and as well as following the sunnah of our beloved Prophet Mohammed Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallam. And what better in the end getting a clean and peaceful heart. Alhamdulillah!

  1. Such an good reminder, it gives us hope that Allah will reward us because of our struggles with people who hurt us.
However does it mean that we can’t ask Allah to deal with them or to give us victory over those who oppress us, in our duas?

    1. JazakAllah Khair for your appreciation. Remember that Allah SWT knows the reason behind your pain and struggles, you make dua to remove your distress, He knows why you are upset and who hurt you? Your silence and your words, all are known to Him. There are times when Prophet SAW made specific duas against those who oppressed them such as people who killed the Ashab e Suffa, or the dua of Prophet Nuh A.S (Surah Ankabout:30) to get the help of Allah against Oppressors. Similarly, you will find many instances in the life of Prophets and in the seerah of Prophet SAW, where they made dua against injustice and oppression. I hope it answers your question insha’Allah.

  2. The religion of Islam still exist today and spreading all over the Glob. Thousands of people embrace Islam and prefer it over all other religions. This happens every though the callers to islam are not financially backed as expected; and in spite of the efforts of the enemies of islam to hall the spread of islam.

(Verily, We sent down the Reminder (i.e Qur’an ) and surely, we will gaurd it from Corruption.) [Qur’an 15:9]
