Life-Lessons: Juz 18

Do not Waste your Time

Surah Al-Muminoon Verse# 115

أَفَحَسِبْتُمْ أَنَّمَا خَلَقْنَـٰكُمْ عَبَثًۭا وَأَنَّكُمْ إِلَيْنَا لَا تُرْجَعُونَ 115

Then did you think that We created you uselessly and that to Us you would not be returned?”

Bismillah.

What is up nowadays? Nothing much. What are you doing right now? Nothing much. Just chilling.

What plans for the future? Nothing much..haven’t really thought about it. Do these statements feel similar? What do they show? That I am just spending time doing nothing fruitful, just passing time either in play or some other amusement. And what is worse than that? we don’t even realize we are indulging in wasteful activities or that we are “merely” wasting time. Astaghfirullah may Allah protect us from this Ameen.

This brief yet really stern ayah raises a very important question that is do we really think Allah Has created us without any purpose and that we will not be returned to Him? Will we not be held accountable for what we do in His court? We all very well know the answer to this question alhamdulillah. We know Allah Ta’ala is our Rabb who created us and He tests us on what will we do in this world which is a place of test for the believers and as for the disbelievers it is a place to do whatever they wish because they don’t believe in the hereafter and nor that they will be held accountable for what they do by Allah Almighty Who created them.

We should see what is our stance and where do we stand? Do we read Quran and really believe in its commandments? Where do we spend our time? Do we spend time making Allah happy? Do we pray? Do we give time to Qur’an? Do we have in mind in whatever deed we are doing that angels are recording them and we will surely see them on the day of judgment? When we make it a routine to consider these questions in our daily lives, really then will we start taking our time seriously and make sure to spend it for Allah’s pleasure and not otherwise.

A question arises then should we not engage in worldly activities at all? The answer is obviously no, of course, you can but in a moderate way. Do what is important but try not to engross yourself in vain and non-purposeful activities which have no benefit in them at all except time wastage.

Life-Lessons

Not just what the Qur’an says but researchers have confirmed too that people who spend a lot of time in useless activities and random time on social media etc go into depression after some time. And the solution is that they should engage themselves in something purposeful and fruitful.

SubhanAllah and our blessed Qur’an have taught us this so many years back yet we do not take heed.

  • If you are someone who spends a lot of time in vain, shift yourself to reading and pondering over Quran. Push yourself in that time that you are not going to waste time rather contemplating over Quran. Listen to your favorite tafseer or teacher. Make dua to Allah to help you be fruitful and not waste your time.
  • Always have the end in mind. And that is we all will return to Allah one day. Our end is the hereafter and our ticket to Jannah is our good deeds and of course Allah’s mercy. Spend quality time and have in mind the end result.
  • Spend quality time with your family and parents and play with them. This will be written as a good deed. Rather than each family member sitting separately and using their own gadgets having no time for each other.
  • Do whatever good you can with the correct intention to make Allah happy and make your life purposeful. Remind yourself and others around you.
  • We learn from the Seerah of Prophet Muhammad Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallam as well how he was engaged in fruitful activities all the time and likewise his family and companions. They did not have time for laghw(vain activities). Rather they made sure that they spend their time pleasing Allah by studying teaching Quran and spending quality time with family.
  • Serve humanity. You spend time wisely and gain Allah’s pleasure too.

May Allah allow us to spend our time carefully seeking His pleasure in the very little things we do and bearing in mind that we all will eventually return to Him so we race further in doing good deeds and not wasting our time in vain activities Ameen.
